Good Afternoon Oppo (if in yurrup or east of)
I been stuck at this dead end job where so much was promised and due to a strange graduate placement scheme didn’t get paid nearly as much as was advertised. As a result, I’m stuck doing a draughtsman (draftsman) job for junior draughtsman pay, I went to university goddamit and I am an engineer!
Anyway, I have always been in search of a new role and applied for a Junior Engineers role at a bigger company and following two interviews they have made me an offer, an offer I can’t refuse, pay increase of £6k/$9.2k, less hours, closer to home (commute is the same time because traffic) with a whole host of company benefits. It is however a six month contract initially and I’ve been struggling to decide if I can make the jump from permanent to contract and a shout out to Milky from Oppo for this, I sort of discussed randomly with him/her the situation and he/she made me see the light so a big thanks to him/her.
Good Joblopnik.

I would say do it. Even if it’s temporary, it is more experience, and if your contract ends, you’re likely to be hired somewhere else with equal or higher pay due to your experience there.

Do it! If you decide it’s too much, I’ll take some of the extra money off your hands.

Auto Industry? My first automotive engineer position was a 6 month contract, I did a good job and they hired me direct at the end of it. They just want to make sure you aren’t an idiot, many of the new grads have no real skills.

it’s oil and gas, my background is auto but I’m not in a position to move where the auto jobs are, I’ve been in a drawing office for 15 months now.

I wanted to be an engineer when I grew up. And then I didn’t. Grow up, that is...
Those draughtman’s skills will stand you in good stead forever. You will wind up glad you have them, because you’ll be better at them than anyone else.
My advice would be to take the contract and work your ass off. And when you come to the next bridge, kick the trolls’ asses and saunter across.
You go, boy.

Provided the financial forecast remains unchanged it’s likely to become a permanent role.

I was a drafter/designer while I was finishing my degree (had to support myself), so I know how frustrating a job like that can get. Congrats on the new gig man!

It wouldn’t have been so bad if they advertised it as draftsman instead of Mechanical Design Engineer and if the they advertised the prospective salary instead of some fantasy made up number they had no intention of paying me. The real issue for me hating it so much is that there is so little work, for months now I’ve just been sitting around with nothing to do for days and I go home frustrated and angry because I haven’t achieved anything with my life that day.
I’m making the call in a couple hours to accept the new job.

In my mind the sidewalks do light everywhere you walk Mr Humpkins.
Also, the first four letters of my last name are Hump.
